A few days ago I found a baby hat on my terrace. I wouldn't have more than 3-4 days and I thought I wouldn't survive, but there it goes, a week later. I have been informing and learning, and since I have become an expert in the breeding of the sparrow, I explain how I have done it, in case you ever meet one.
What in principle seems very complicated is easy when you learn. In pet stores they sell special food for baby birds. The one that I have bought is called Exact, and it works very well, since it has been awful since I started using it. It is in the form of a powder, which is mixed with water to prepare a porridge similar to that of human babies. Then you use a syringe to give him the food. The end of the syringe is very similar to the mother's beak, and it is very easy to give her the food that way. Practice a little before with the syringe to calculate the strength and speed, lest you put too much food in your mouth.
While you get the proper food, you can feed it with a porridge made with a mixture of canned cat food, whole wheat bread crumb and hard boiled egg. Under no circumstances should milk be given. Nor should the beak be forced open.
If it is very small, it must be given very frequently, every 20 minutes or half an hour. Although the same bird will ask you and set its pace. You can see his buche in the neck, filling with food. It is the place where they store it and from there it goes into the stomach as they need it. It is important that you control what makes poop and that it is not constipated. If it is, make a more liquid porridge.
The temperature is very important. I made a nest in a cup, with a piece of towel and toilet paper on top. I covered the cup leaving a slit and placed it next to a lamp with a 40-watt bulb. The bulb heats the lamp screen and it transmits heat that does not burn the nest / cup. At first I checked every few minutes until I noticed that the temperature was adequate and the bird is comfortable. If it is hot it will have its beak open and if it is cold you will notice its cold skin. The temperature of the hat is about 40 degrees Celsius or higher, so when you touch it you will feel it hot if it has an adequate temperature.
If you have food left over, you can use an ear stick soaked in water to clean it.
With approximately two weeks of life, the gurriatos volantones leave the nest, but the parents are still close and aware of them and feed them for another two weeks, until the birds join other young sparrows and become completely independent. Therefore, to release them you will have to make that transition, leaving them out of the nest in a place where they can practice the flight (they need to learn to land and settle in various places). I have thought about putting it in a cage on the terrace, having him practice the flight at home and when he is ready to leave the cage door open to do what he wants. If you do this, it is most likely that you will continue to eat for a while at your home and stay in the area and visit you frequently.
Finally, I have been using Bach flowers for several days, which I think have been very important for him to survive while I have learned to raise him well. I used Rescue Remedy, which should always be used when finding it, before trying to feed it, while you warm it with your hand. I also used Olive, because he seemed physically weak. When I opened my eyes I gave him mimulus, because he showed some fear. Now he's a cheeky, he eats very well and doesn't need Bach flowers. I hope to see you fly free soon.
If you want, copy this and send it online.
Sparrow species
The sparrow is a bird originally from Africa and from some regions of Europe and Asia, where it abounds in fields and gardens. It is distinguished from other species by its small size and brown hues. In addition, it is a bird that does not walk, but moves in small jumps.
According to the Spanish Ornithological Society there are 26 species of sparrows in the world, but we will show you the three most popular and well-known:
White-crowned Sparrow
He white-crowned sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys) is originally from the United States and Canada, where it lives in areas with abundant shrubs. Its plumage is grayish, its head has black and white stripes, and its wings are brown. It is organized in groups of several individuals to find food.
Sabanero Sparrow
He sabanero sparrow (Ammodramus savannarum) lives in the United States, the Antilles and Canada, where he prefers temperate zones, swamps and tundras. Its plumage is brown or gray with stripes on the back and on the chest, in addition, it has a kind of light-colored eyebrow above its eyes. It is a migratory bird, so it is common to observe it traveling in groups at certain times of the year.
What to do if I find a sparrow?
If you have found a sparrow that has fallen from the nest, you will most likely think about picking it up and taking care of it. However, it may have fallen due to the wind or it is making its first flights. So, the first thing we advise you is to stay at prudential distance for a while and wait for their parents to come to pick it up. Otherwise, you can help by taking care of him.
On the other hand, if you do not observe any nest nearby and consider the sparrow is injured or in danger, we recommend you act quickly and take it to a veterinary clinic, since some health problems, such as a parasitic infestation or a fracture, require specialized treatment.
Before delving into the sparrow's diet you should know some basic care. It is very important that you prepare a place where you can rest. If we talk about a pigeon or an adult bird, it is advisable to use a conditioned cage with nest. Search any animal products store for a completely closed nest and place materials inside to make you feel more comfortable, such as goat hair or coconut fiber.
Place a water container, although those with a drip system are not recommended, as it could accidentally drown. The appropriate way is to use a bottle for parakeets with pitorro, which will allow the bird to lean to drink without any problem. You must also have a feeder.
Finally, it is recommended to keep the cage open in a ventilated site where sunlight comes, but not directly, as prolonged exposure can be harmful to the animal. Sunlight, however, is useful for the development of pigments in the wings of the offspring of this species.
In the event that you have found a newborn bird, the ideal is to place it in a closed cardboard box, with holes, in which you must place a properly fixed open nest, so that it can take refuge and maintain body temperature.
How to feed a newborn sparrow>
To feed a newborn sparrow it is recommended not supply solid food, since they are unable to digest them correctly. It is preferable to feed it with pap homemade or commercial breeding paste for insectivores, and supplied with a needleless syringe that will go directly to the animal's mouth. The porridge should never be prepared with dairy, as it would mean death for the sparrow, since the species does not tolerate them.
While you feed it, you must make sure do not stain the animalWell, this translates into a problem if the porridge dries in its plumage. Also, don't forget to check that your nasal passages are free of obstructions so that you breathe properly. It is highly recommended to consult with a veterinarian. This diet should be offered until the second or third week of life, until its plumage begins to develop.
In this video you can learn to feed a newborn sparrow:
The sparrow feeding
When the sparrow has a suitable place to rest, it is necessary that you feed it so that it obtains the necessary nutrients for its growth and development. The sparrow feeding varies depending on your ageWell, it is not the same when it is newborn than when it is an adult.
In this regard, follow the following recommendations:
What does a baby sparrow eat?
From the second or third week of life and until the sparrow reaches about two months of age we must begin to modify its diet. The most advisable is acquire breeding stock for insectivores, which we can find in any veterinary clinic of exotic animals or in pet products stores.
The breeding paste for insectivores It usually contains small insects, such as mealworms, flies, crustaceans or snails, all dehydrated and ground. We will follow the instructions for use of the product, which generally recommend adding water to make it more palatable.
In case of emergency, we can use use cat food To feed a baby sparrow. We advise you to choose a good quality product. We will moisten it until it is very soft and crush it so that the sparrow is able to digest it easily.
What does an adult sparrow eat?
Upon reaching adulthood, sparrows are very useful for being human, since they feed on a large number of insects and completely eliminate pests present in the areas or fields they inhabit. However, when there are no insects to eat, sparrows feed on seeds, especially wheat from plantations, causing problems for farmers.
That is why, if you have rescued an adult sparrow, it is best to buy a combination of seeds and cereals for wild birds, which usually includes wheat, corn, oats or soy. It may also contain mixtures of herbs and fruits. It is possible to find it in any store of products for animals.
In any case, it is very advisable to combine the prepared food with fresh fruit and vegetables, at the time we provide breeding paste for insectivores.

Homemade sparrow breeding pasta
Prepare the brood paste With cat feed it is very simple, you just have to add the amount of feed you want, although with a teaspoon it is more than enough, and add water until the croquette has gotten quite wet. When this occurs, mash with a fork or spoon to create a homogeneous porridge.
If homemade pasta is too thick and has difficulty eating, it is preferable to add a little more water to make it more liquid. Another totally valid option is to prepare a lighter paste in terms of consistency, made from soybeans (remember that sparrows can not drink animal milk), wheat flour and enough raw egg so that it is not too thick Not too liquid.
As the sparrow grows, you can offer the food on a plate to peck from there. The most advisable thing is that it be food for canaries, because other types of food are harmful.
How to feed a baby sparrow?
The crop is a small membrane that is located at the base of the neck and that supplies the food to the stomach little by little. When you feed the sparrow breeding you must verify that the crop is not full. To do this, gently feel just below the head, if you feel a small round lump you will know that the crop is full. Do not worry, soon you will be able to identify it just by looking at it. You should feed the sparrow every time you see the empty crop, approximately every two to three hours. If you notice that the crop does not empty, go to the veterinarian.
The correct way to feed a baby sparrow It is with a syringe, preferably only 5 milliliters or the smallest you get. Once you have it, remove the needle and fill it with some food. If the sparrow's bump is empty, bring the syringe nozzle to the corner of the spout, eject some food to notice, open and receive the food. It is preferable to do it on the sides of the beak and not in front, as you could deposit the food directly in the throat and this, in addition to being unpleasant for the bird, can cause it to choke. Likewise, introducing the syringe inside the beak as soon as you start feeding the baby sparrow can make you not want to eat because of the stress of the situation. It is better to go little by little, letting it be he who marks the times.
If some food is spilled, clean it immediately with a swab or a damp cloth, otherwise it will dry on the feathers and be more difficult to remove. Once you see the full crop, the sparrow will be satisfied.
If you wonder how often you have to feed the baby sparrow, the ideal is to do it every two hours approximately, although everything will depend on each copy and what you eat. In this sense, it is essential not to open the beak of the breeding by force, since this would generate a lot of stress and hinder the task. At first, it may be normal to only admit water, so you should try until you get it to open its beak and accept the food. If after 24-48 hours you still don't eat, go to the vet as soon as possible.
How to teach a sparrow to eat alone?
When the sparrow meets the two months of life, will be ready to start eating alone. Place food in a container near the water so that it becomes accustomed. At first he will not be able to eat and nothing else will peck the container, during this time he continues feeding him with the syringe, but suspends the morning meal so that he develops the instinct to look for his own food. If you see that it costs a little, put a small portion in the palm of your hand and, little by little, guide it to the right place.
Watch that your sparrow is not attractive while learning to eat. Try giving different types of food and try to rotate them several times a day. The feedingof the adult sparrow It is varied, you can eat different seeds, corn, wheat or soy. They can also feed on oats and some small insects. Do not miss the article "What does a sparrow eat" to know how to introduce this new food.
Growth of a sparrow
If you wish raise the sparrow in captivity you should look for a comfortable cage with wide bars. Once you have it, you should place it in a place where it does not give direct sunlight. Also, keep the cage door open so you don't feel confined. The sparrow is a very sociable animal, so if you sit in a comfortable environment inside the cage and always have food and water in it, it will return to the nest you have built.
Pay attention to the sounds of your new pet, if you notice that he pees in excess does not mean that he is very happy, on the contrary, it can be a symptom that he is stressed, which can be lethal.
If you wish let the sparrow free, you must make sure that he is able to feed himself, to fly in perfect conditions and, in general, to survive. In addition, it is important to take into account the weather, since if you release it in the middle of winter with total probability it will not survive without the heat of your house, the ideal is to do it in spring or summer. Once you've discovered that he doesn't need you to eat, you must make the change progressively, so it is not advisable to release it in a place away from your home or do it suddenly, because you have not yet learned where the dangers are or how to get away from them. Something as simple as knowing in which branch you can pose does not know because you have not been raised with others of your kind. Thus, first let him make contact with the outside and other sparrows by sealing the windows with, for example, a mosquito net or a mesh, and leaving the young sparrow loose at home. In this way, you can perch on the window, observe what is outside and even interact with the sparrows that approach it.
As you get used to this contact, you can remove the mosquito net and open the window so that it is he alone who decides when to leave. Of course, keep your cage close and open so you can enter again if you want. Remember that your house and the nest that you have prepared for it is the only home it knows, and there is a possibility that you do not want to live abroad permanently.
If there are no wild sparrows near your house, the release of your sparrow is complicated. For these cases, we advise go to wildlife recovery and liberation centers to be advised.

Tere is beautiful your page spills tenderness and Cuqui is beautiful. The video is spectacular. All this just confirms what I already know, and that is that you are an excellent person, affection, Ro.
I found a baby sparrow. I was believe with a broken leg. I took it with great delicacy, I took it to my house. Once in the house, I gave him water. Everything seemed to be going well. Then I made the biggest mistake: I gave her MILK WITH BREAD. At first it seemed to swallow it. She was very small, she was almost bare, although you had the feathers of the wings. She was lying forward, resting her head on the floor, it is as if she could not lift it. It gave me joy, but at 4 or 5 hours, he died, he began to breathe badly. I do not know what I did wrong, but seeing the forums, it sure was that he did not tolerate milk, then the little head had it as without a bra. Something was happening, I would like to know what he died of, but surely the milk did not do him good. damn popular culture. I've been pretty bad, although I prefer to forget the episode because I get sad and helpless. Thanks for this blog, Dani.
[email protected], I am very sorry for my ignorance! :-(
I think it's not because of the milk because I had a sparrow that gave him bread and milk at the beginning and didn't die when he learned to fly we let him go
Hello Dani, you should not blame yourself for the death of the little sparrow, surely the fall was strong, and possibly he had a damaged neck, not because you gave him milk once he died, stay calm, died of the fall, you had no fault On the contrary, you did everything you could for him, I hope you will soon find another little baby and this time you can get it out!
a hug,
Teresa
Something similar happened to me and I have been taking care of sparrows that have fallen and always died in recent years but I know that I did what I could
Hello could you help me? today I found a common sparrow not very baby but not yet flying, well fly for very short distances but not high, and I would like to know the necessary care to then release it, please do not want anything bad to happen to you.
Hello Teresa, sorry to bother you, but if you find another baby sparrow alone without the parents, will you let her die? Or will you take her home like Cuqui?
Hi Teresa, thank you very much for this information and advice, they are serving me a lot. The little boy is very well eager to eat and is quite active also seems very brave hehe because my two nymphs are very gossip and get on top of the cage where I have Mika (sparrow) and instead of getting scared goes up above to get close to them, again thank you very much for all your advice
Hi Izan! I'm glad that this little bird goes ahead, in a few days he shows him the breeding pasta and the crushed balls on a plate, so that he gets used to eating alone little by little, also put breadcrumbs, cookies. and alpiste, that although at first he does not want it, you will see how he will only learn to go peeling it.
Good luck with him!
You know Teresa, I hope I already had my house like you, but I am still a 14-year-old boy with a love for the awesome birds to catch and feed them but the bad thing if I have them at home. They have to live in a cage because my mother says that I will not let them loose because poop is going to be pumped everywhere and I don't feel like waiting 10 more years to have my house with my little raised baby and my side because I am not It would bother me to clean his poops, you can clean the poop that is being thrown on the sofa in the stuffed animals and that and you have it taught to go to a place to do them please answer that it is almost summer and already bi yesterday a baby on the floor but less than I was with his daddies and I left it there, thank you if you answer me many kisses Teresa:) and when you go to answer me if you get in the blog call me Jose Luis that is my name.
Hello I would like to know if it is enough to take it out 2 or 3 hours a day from your cage at home
We all work I have a parrot and two nymphs that I take out daily for two to six hours depending on the day, is it necessary to take it out every day? How do you have it? you are not afraid of being put behind a piece of furniture that is my biggest fear thanks in advance
The furniture thing is scary but to me, my singer got under the sofa and I took it out and that's been 3 years and it's already 4 years old
Hi Alfonso,
she lives in her cage that is leaning on the corner of the kitchen where we eat, and has the door always open, she loves her cage and does not come out of it at all, and I am calm even having the whole house open, yes, as I have a mosquito net in the window, which is next to it, I remain calmer, but I have the rest open. To take it out because I want to take it to the room for a little while, don't see the laps that it gives me to take it, because it doesn't want to leave, since that is its little house where everything is controlled. If yours adapted to being locked, no problem, take it out every day for a little while, although I already tell you that the ideal would be to feel free with its open door, they are made to their cabin and from there they do not want to leave.
Greetings,
Teresa
thank you very much teresade you are a great help I hope you continue helping more gorriencillos as I plan to do lol
Hi Teresa, my sparrow is moving on, it already has a month and a week. Would you recommend extending every shot? Now I am giving you brood paste, insect paste, rice, wet bread, and wet cookies. Would you recommend introducing me more? you have a great blog
Hi Alfonso, congratulations on the bird. It is good that you are putting a bird in that mixture, and go leaving a plate with birdseed and some dry pasta in the cage, that he will gradually eat alone, keep in mind that at this age they are already flying and eat alone .
Greetings,
Teresa
Teresa, I don't know if I screwed her up, I have a sparrow that I think is volandón, my father brought it to me but I don't think it was pulled from the nest on my own initiative, since there was an impressive storm an hour before picking it up, and it was left catch, did not fly and had an atrocious hunger. I have it already 15 days and my doubt is whether to leave it in the same place or continue taking care of it. I do not know if it flies or not, I do not dare to drop it at home (I have it in a cage with nest made with strips of newspaper, but the cage always closed on the balcony of a 5th floor), the house is full of objects and bookshelves and if he gets behind something and dies I get a heart attack. Eat like a possessed, I give boiled rice, canary for canaries, insectivorous pasta (I already dry it), small pieces of fruit and pieces of bread dipped in water. He eats himself and is very frightened. When he sees me he is no longer frightened, I am afraid of releasing him and that he trusts in any danger. What to do? Thank you
Little angel
Hello Angelita, you did not annoy her, you have simply saved him from certain death, he fell from his nest early as he did to mine, and his guardian angel, your father, arrived and saved him. And thanks to your care, still with you. If he is used to his cage, he will not die, I tell you, I have Cuqui in the kitchen with the door of his cage open, but she is very rare to leave, there she is super happy, she has everything: her feeders full of birdseed, sticks to apollarse, its swing, that you do not see how it swings !, a toy with colored balls, a cuttlefish bone, which is great for calcium, and loves it, and when we sit at the table, it he places me at the door of his cage asking for food, and I always give him tiny bits of food, he loves it all! It's super happy, so I see that you could try to have your little bird inside and get used to his cage. If you see that you are going through the house, and you see that in his cage it is fine, he will not die anymore, put his bird feeder feeders, give him a peck, (not overcooked rice that my veterinarian told me is starch and pasta is made inside and the crop is filled and it is not good, avoid it, two or three granites, nothing more) I had before Cuqui another bow tie that lived happily in its cage, I took it out occasionally, although it was not left take because I was happy inside, and was going to a bouquet of flowers that was in my bedroom and my book and then did not move, and lived seven years super happy in his cage. Therefore, if you let go now, you may not know how to live alone and will die, try what I have told you, in a few days he will know that the little cage is his house and he will be super happy. and tell me!
Holaa :) I had 4 small sparrows because I have a nest at home and they almost always fall. 1 of them survived because I put him in his nest (there were still offspring) and the other 3 died (I gave them milk. :(). Today I found 2 pups fallen from the nest (the nest overlooks a courtyard with walls where they cannot to leave) and I have taken them and I have put them in the nest (there were no more offspring.) After a while I looked out and they had fallen again. I have gone to put them again and a baby has flown away (I was quite happy : D) but the other one is smaller and just flutters. I have taken it and left it in the nest. I have returned after a while and I have seen that it was peeping, I suppose calling the mother. And I am a mess because if the mother does not come back? What can I do? I take it? I don't have time or money to take care of it :( thanks :)
Hello, please, do not let her die, it is not a matter of money because it costs nothing to feed a beanie, just a little dedication, then you can release it, but take it as soon as possible, the mother will no longer feed her , once someone looks out even nest leaves them, pious because he is hungry and in a few hours he will die. Give it water first, put it in your mouth and with your piquito tomel sure you will be thirsty and dehydrated, then, if you have a dog or cat, crush some balls and prepare a paste with water, open the beak and give it a tad , when he sees that it is food, the next he will only do it, if you do not have dog food, he can serve you cookies, bread, but please, give him water and some food or he will die. Look at the section on how to feed and eat them. Regards, Teresa
hello! I found a sparrow pigeon in the street and took it home, I gave it water and it was super good. I was spying and jumping. After an hour I decided to take it out to the grass to see what it was doing, but after a while, it began to squirm already Bring your head back. I put it back in the box and kept doing that for half an hour more until it died. What did I do wrong? It makes me sad.
it's complicated, it could have been hungry, cold, that it was already bad. Do not be overwhelmed by it, they are very fragile little birds and you did the best you could for him. A hug, Teresa
Yesterday I found a sparrow rather said rescue from the bushes I'm feeding him and it's pretty good so far he is in a box and I take it out in a kind of cage he takes for me, and I think he gets more and more used to me.
Thank you very much for the help but if you tell me this and give me a little help it would be very good to be able to take better care of this sparrow.
Felipe.-
Hello Felipe, I already told you in the mail, but you know, even a little boy, that it does not go cold, put cottons that he will take refuge in them, and that he does not lack his food shots, and take care of the other animals that you have at home don't do anything to him. Good luck with him!
Teresa
thank you very much Teresa for answering the mail and for commenting and also for the advice and you are a great person
Hello

What a joy. Now to take care of him, and enjoy, you'll see what you want a little thing so small! a hug, Teresa
hey teresa I don't know where the sparrow nests are, and I also want one, but I just want to know where the nests are in case one falls down and take care of it
Hi I loved the forum very useful and the truth is very tender. I found myself one day ago, a little sparrow pigeon, and she eats well, but it is a little bit arisca, I hope she survives. I had no luck when I was a girl and they were always dying but now I know how to act thanks and I hope my pia grows like her cqui
greetings daya !!
Hello, yesterday I brought a baby sparrow house, I am feeding him with a straw and miagon with water, I always take her out to the patio to listen to other sparrows and she also sings, she is female. I had another one that lasted 4 years and died , but because I was older, perky video and blog and get many pups :)
Hi. What a beautiful story!
We are also of the breed of "sparrow saviors", we have a sparrow that is two years old, it looks a lot like yours.
The fact is that we have collected a second sparrow, although we have doubted a lot because we do not want it to be domestic. Every time summer arrives and we see the rest of the free birds coming to visit our bird we are very sorry.
Therefore, this time we want to release him before he becomes fond of us, and we with him. Besides, our bird attacks him, I don't think it's a good idea to have them together.
We have him in the patio of lights and we thought to feed him every hour without seeing us much, and leave him the door of the cage open so that he goes out and enters semi-freedom.
What do you think, will it work? What other advice can you give us?
Thank you!
Hello, I think it's a great idea that little by little you give half-freedom to the youngster until he assumes it completely.
Leticia

He vivido grandes aventuras con Arturo.
